We have 3 acres to trim. As we've aged, the gas trimmer that we own is getting heavier and heavier. The cordless Black & Decker is so light weight, even someone with arthritis can trim the yard and not be in pain all day. It doesn't have the power of the gas trimmer, but does get the job done.
We do seem to be able to trim our entire yard with the 2 batteries that came with it.
Another past purchase on Amazon is a Black & Decker battery charger that charges in 90 minutes. So even if we ran out both batteries,
we could just have a coffee break and get back to trimming.
Definitely a good buy for seniors!

Received the Grass Hog quickly, in good condition,(looks brand new) and now put it to use every few days on my three properties. I have a good supply of 18 volt B and D batteries and never run out of power. Would buy another one in a heartbeat.

Really good price and works great. Needed to tweak the auto feeder but now it works fine and battery has good life - 30 to 45 min of continuous running. Comes with a spare so no worries!

After reading up on several models of cordless trimmers, we settled on this Black & Decker model for a few reasons... 1) value: for the price, how could we be disappointed? Just the batteries are worth the cost, the trimmer is practically free. 2: We already own another 18V B&D product, so purchasing this model gives us a total of 2 chargers and 4 batteries.
For me, the biggest problem with this trimmer is its weight. I am about 5'2", and the trimmer does adjusts nicely in length to accomodate my height. However, it is heavy for me. The batteries, as I expected from other reviews, don't last for a long time. I find that, by the time the battery gives out after 20-25 minutes, my arms are also giving out, so it isn't that much of an issue. I plan ahead and have the 2nd battery charged so it is ready whenever I am. I have been using the trimmer on grass along the edge of my flower gardens and stone walls and it trims beautifully, although I sometimes have to make more than one pass. I have not tried it on thick grass or woody stalks, but I expect it would eventually cut through. My husband tried it and was pleased. He is 6' and he was able to quickly extend its length to his comfort. He says that he will most likely use this trimmer more often than his gas powered one.

I have had my B&D trimmer now for about six years. The pro's of the trimmer are (compared to corded): There is no extension cord to un-spool, negotiate, and re-spool. (gas): There is no gas needed, no oil needed, no mixing gas and oil needed. No pulling a cord over and over to start. No 2-cyle motor, far fewer moving parts, very reliable. No tingly feeling in my hands and arms after trimming from the constant vibration of the gas trimmer. No sore back; the cordless trimmer is far lighter. No gas motor resting near head blowing exhaust into face. Cordless trimmer is probably like 80% quieter than a gas trimmer; it only makes noise when you pull the trigger. No grease or gunk stuck to trimmer. Head swivels for edging and trimming.
Cons: You will have to replace the Nicad batteries every two to three years at a cost of $65-$80 (compare this to the cost of gas and oil for two years with gas trimmer). You will have to remember to always charge your batteries before use. If you need or like something really powerful the cordless trimmer is not nearly as powerful as gas. The auto line feed does not always work well with the B&D trimmer (more on that below). For anything bigger than a small yard, you will need to change the battery (it comes with two). If you have more than 1 hours worth of trimming you will probably need an extra battery. The batteries will slowly lose charge over life of battery.
As a fix for the auto feed feeding too much line I wind my line the wrong way on the spool so that the auto feed will not work and the line will have to be fed manually. This is very easy to do and takes about 15 sec. I do not have any chain link and I do have a very large yard; I have to do a manual feed about once per trim. This saves a lot of line. Overall, for my suburban yard the B&D has plenty of power, just not as much as a gas trimmer. My B&D works great for what I use it for and I will buy another. I am spoiled now by cordless and will never go back to gas or corded...EVER.
